Obituary is one of the fundamental bands of old-school death metal, emerging from the legendary Florida scene, the birthplace of the genre, alongside Death, Morbid Angel, and Deicide.

Cause of Death is the second album by the death metal band Obituary, released in 1990 and remastered in 1997. This album is considered one of the best in the genre, which helped Obituary gain significant popularity in the extreme metal scene. The album artwork was designed by Michael Whelan. It is the first album with bassist Frank Watkins, as well as the first and only album with guitarist James Murphy, former guitarist of the band Death.

The album artwork was used in an H.P. Lovecraft collection, Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre. The artwork was originally intended for Sepultura's album Beneath the Remains.

The band at that time consisted of John Tardy, James Murphy, Trevor Peres, Frank Watkins, and Donald Tardy.

The album's tracks include these death metal gems: Infected, Body Bag, Chopped in Half, Dying, Find the Arise, Cause of Death, Memories Remain, Turned Inside Out, and a cover of Circle of the Tyrants (Celtic Frost).
